By using the energy of the land, some humans have found they can develop extraordinary abilities. At the age of 17, these warriors, magicians, chemists, and psychics are allowed the opportunity to train at the Academy, increasing their opportunity for a well-paying career. But there's a catch. They must fight beside the Army if requested by their king. Most aren't concerned by this, as the current treaty has prevented battle for nearly 70 years...but that's about to change.

Of four roommates with interwoven stories, Cleve Polken takes focus as a hostile warrior who feels more comfortable in a duel than a conversation. Never getting past his parents' death, Cleve has developed a crippling fear of psychics, for some may have the power to resurface the torment he buried within himself upon his parents' passing. Cleve's forced to face this fear head-on when he discovers that not only is one of his roommates a psychic, but that he has an overwhelming attraction to her, which he quickly attributes to a psychic spell, nothing more.

By the time an army of savage, reptilian men called Krepps become involved in the war, all hope of resolution without battle is shattered. In this powerful army, one born with the inability to smell doesn't have the same feeding urges as his fellow Krepps and is outcast because of it. He finds himself with an unlikely ally in the middle of a crossroad, trying to find a way to reunite with his sister. Little does he know how much his choices will twist the fate of the war and alter the lives of the four human roommates forever.

Holly Cow! FINALLY finished this book!! i dont think i have ever taken so long to finish a book, dont get me wrong it wasnt bad, actually i rather enjoyed it. not sure why it seemed to take so long - life got in the way i suppose.

there was some fantastic scene's and lines throughout this book that had me cracking up laughing in public places around the city. which i always find amusing.

“I do, but only because their company would be comforting, not valuable. With more people around, we’ll stand out like prostitutes in a training center.”

The characters where pretty fantastic, and i loved how the book was told from so many different POV's and they where NEVER confusing! which is something i really appreciate.

i doubt i could pick out a favorite character they where all pretty amazing and all of them could do incredible things. but i think Effie's POV stood out to me the most, i like the way she saw life.

"She tried to think of a more realistic setting, and to her surprise it came easily. She pictured Cleve and Reela. Sharing a sheet as they spooned after a fiercely passionate tumble of enjoying the pleasures of each other’s body. His arm encircled her like a child tightly holding his blanket in fear of it slipping away. They whispered secrets to each other with their bodies intertwined, and a layer keeping their heart protected was peeled away gently. More layers peeled away the more secrets they shared. Soon there were no layers left— nothing to hide behind. As they clung tightly to each other, they shared their deepest secrets of all, as if it was the only chance they would ever have. When they finally left the bed to dress, all the layers returned, including a new one— containing the love they shared. It was stronger than all the other layers combined and squeezed so tightly around their hearts it would be impossible to remove without ripping it apart."

im not usually the romantic type, and i suppose in her won way neither is she. but her way of looking at life just.... spoke to me.

i cant WAIT to read the next book in this series which i believe is The Sartious Mage. Cleve and Rek have gotten themselves into an interesting situation which i cant wait to see how it pans out.

Bastial Energy The Rhythm of Rivalry Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) B T Narro Nigel Patterson BT Narro Books Reviews

I am kind of torn when reviewing this book. The writing clearly needs work, or at least some serious editing. The characters can be very predictable. The relationships are extremely predictable. The plot is moved along without any real logical explanation of why characters would be making the decisions they are. But! Despite all of this, I was entertained. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. When I finished, I immediately went on to download the next book in the series. So overall I would say that this author has a lot of work to do to mature as a write, but he has a good creative core.
I always find it difficult to write a review, when there are quite a few, coherent well written reviews already. So you may ask why? I feel it's important to give feed back, especially to new writers. It's a way to help improve the story and of course help the author craft better and more enjoyable tales, books you would like to read. With this book the settings, the world building is excellent. While I did enjoy the characters they weren't as multidimensional as they could be. The magic and even the politics was new and very well done. The action would be that much better if it was also a vehicle to get a sense of the characters feelings and beliefs. So all said and done, it's a good story, worth reading and enjoyable.
If there is any problem with this book it is my inability to enjoy reading from one of the characters' perspectives in the beginning. I found myself wanting to just get trough the next four chapters of Zoke and get back to any other character. I found myself wondering if I could just skip a couple chapters without missing any plot pieces. Luckily, I decided against that silly thought.

Honestly, by the end of the book I began to enjoy some of his chapters. His perspective was not so out of place and proved to be much more important to the story as a whole.

Regardless of my initial frustration with a single character in the book I love this series. The author does a wonderful job creating and building his characters. It is so easy to empathize with and understand the drive of each person.

Another incredible thing that I've found in this series is how well put together it is. Everything that happens just flows and makes sense. It all comes together smoothly and logically as if the author planned the entire world and every detail before even starting the first book.

I highly recommend you read this book and follow it with the rest of the series.
I felt the start to this book was very strong, with interesting characters and a conflict that was shrouded and uncertain yet not entirely existent either. However I felt the author tried to do to much with not enough space. With very little in the way of mentioning skills and the main character barely knowing many if the people that he eventually sends into danger I felt that the author was jumping it conclusions throughout the book that he hadn't explained. Plus the style of back and forth was not successful until the end of the book, I found whenever lizard guy showed up I had to restrain myself from skipping because I knew it would be important later on in the novel. In addition the campus lifestyle was way to modern for the setting the novel is depicted in with everything from wild college parties to stupid jocks. Smh. That being said there certainly is a potentially good book hidden with this one, with a fast moving plot ad characters that were definitely relatable, this book was not altogether unpleasant just unfulfilling.
