"Burn Notice" and "Pushing Daisies" writer, Lisa Joy, wrote this gripping coming-of-age tale of an 18-year-old girl who happens to be Athena. In Athena's life, there's no such thing as hyperbole. Her "evil" stepmother? Hera, who's actually evil and out to kill her. The bad boy she falls in love with? Hades, king of the underworld. The philandering father whose approval she always seeks and fails to attain? Zeus the ultimate deadbeat dad. And now she must take on all of the gods in order to stop them from destroying mankind.

Headache does a supremely clever job of transplanting the Gods and Goddesses to the modern day world. You've got Hera as a plotting desperate housewife, Poseidon as a surfer dude, and Apollo as a movie star. There are so many great little mythology allusions spread throughout, but Headache certainly doesn't require an extensive knowledge of Greek mythology to enjoy. In that way it has the best elements of Fables in its ability to update and transform a myth/folklore element to the present day.Headache starts off with Sarah, a 19 year old girl in a mental institution, who we quickly learn is actually the half-goddess Athena. Athena's step-mother Hera has had her institutionalized and doped up so she doesn't remember who she is, in order to stop Athena from interfering with Hera and Zeus's plans for an apocalypse. Once Athena is able to escape, she's reunited with her family as she tries to stop her father and step-mother from destroying mankind. I really loved the interactions between the gods and goddesses in this book. Headache does a brilliant job of putting all the jealousies, infidelities, betrayals and manipulations one would expect from the Greek gods to good use.
The dialogue is also especially great. There are too many good one-liners to list, but if you're a fan of Joss Whedon style wise-cracks, then this is right up your alley. Even the titles were often laugh-out-loud funny double entendres.
Athena also made for a great heroine -- witty, smart, and kick-ass, yet interesting and vulnerable at the same time. I really enjoyed this book and would love to see it continue to see what more is in store for these characters. It's definitely ripe subject matter, and as great as this first volume of Headache is, I have a feeling it's only just brushed the surface of amazing stories it could tell.

This was my first comic book purchase- being that my husband is a huge comic fan but I've never really delved into the territory... I decided to give this one a try and was beyond pleasantly surprised! As a girl, I could really relate! I loved that the protagonist was a strong willed ass kicking female! Lisa Joy has done a wonderful job connecting the present with the era of Old World Gods and I found it to be a thrilling story! Definitely a must try for both comic aficionados and newbies alike!!
This was an entertaining small graphic novel about an 18 year old girl named Sarah who is actually the Greek Goddess, Athena. The artwork was very colorful & I liked how the story moved along for most of the book. However, some parts seemed to go a bit too fast, but that is to be expected with this short graphic novel. I would have liked to read more on Hades in this story, possibly more details in a flashback; but overall I am happy with how the story went. I love mythology & this was a nice little read in this world of Greek gods and goddesses!
